[To You, From Me] Doing It Afraid

Change can be scary. Starting something new can be a challenge. I know this all too well. When I started hosting Conversations LIVE radio show in July 2003 I had no idea where it would go or quite honestly if it would last. Up until that point I had started making a name for myself as a poet, artist and speaker, but would my relative success follow me to the airwaves? I really didn't know. The only thing I could say for sure is that I knew it was something I had to try. If I didn't then I would always have the regret.

Now at the time of my writing this letter to you I have interviewed over 8,820 guests on the radio show, hundreds for my web-series (and now TV show) Cyrus Webb Presents and featured hundreds in the pages of Conversations Magazine since 2006. All because I took a risk and was willing to do it even though I was afraid and unsure of the outcome.

I get it. You might think it's easy for me to tell you to go for that dream, tackle that obstacle and keep going even though you get knocked down. The truth of the matter is that I CAN tell you to, because I have done it. I have experienced the highs, the lows but never EVER did I think about quitting. I knew I had been given something that was supposed to be shared, and I was and still remain committed to it.

This issue of Conversations Magazine not just profiles some of the biggest interviews of my 16 years hosting Conversations LIVE and the 13 years publishing Conversations Magazine. It represents you, the individuals who have been with me along the way and seen how year by year we have grown, evolved and stayed committed to bringing you the very best.

Actor Michael Welch: Enjoying Work and Life Each and Every Day

It has been my pleasure to not just call actor Michael Welch a regular guest on Conversations LIVE but a friend as well. He has always been open with me on the air and off, so of course as I was preparing the anniversary issue of the magazine he had to be included.

2019 has been great year for both of us. In this interview we talked about the journey and how he got here---and appreciating all that has come along the way. 

Michael, thanks for the time. What has it been like for you to see the way that this year started off for you?
It's been really amazing, man. I've been plugging away at this for over 21 years. It's funny, at the end of last year I kind of got a feeling that this was gonna be a good year for me. I just had a sense that things were going to start picking up.

I got a good life. I'm settling in with my baby and my new life. I feel good creatively, and I've built up all these relationships. The key to all of this is persistence, more than anything else. It's been really incredible. I'm very grateful. 

What I love about your life and your journey and even what you just shared is because it is really the epitome of what I tell people all the time. It's really about putting in the work, keeping your head down, doing your best, and then things just show up for you because you kind of set that record. Do you think that is the key to why you had that feeling in 2018? 
Yeah! I think that has a lot to do with it. I remember Russell Crowe gave an interview many years ago where he basically said, listen, I don't think I'm any good at this. Which is what forces me to work so hard at it. And the interviewer was saying to him is that actually true. Russell goes well I know if I didn't put in that work, it wouldn't result in whatever it is you guys are seeing. The stories you always hear are the overnight success stories.

The reason you hear those stories is because they're the exception, not the rule. That's quite literally one in a million. So for the rest of us we got to work. There's just no other way around it.

You've been able to work with some amazing producers and directors. What does that experience mean to you, especially looking at this year and what you've been doing?
Yeah, it's it's been great. I've been lucky enough to be able to cultivate some really great relationships over the years. You know, it's funny. As a younger person, you just don't have the perspective to understand how important stuff like this is. I never really took stock in or inventory in that before. Know I know the importance of building those relationships, knowing who the casting directors are and staying in touch with producers. In retrospect I wish I had done more of that.

What would your advice be for those who are looking to you as an example?
People always ask me what's advice for young actors. I say to them leave a good feeling for people to have about you when you leave for the day. It's really all about relationships. I would say most of my jobs in the last couple years had to do with people that either had known or worked with or had seen my work or it's a connection of a connection. Always make the most of that time you have. It goes a long way.

TO YOU, FROM ME: The Power of Letting Go

We've all been there: holding on to something that is either weighing us down or keeping us stagnant. It's not easy to pull yourself away from individuals or circumstances that have become comfortable for us, especially if feelings have gotten involved.

What I have learned, however, is that we do everyone involved a disservice by staying in a place where no good is being served. In my own life I have had to sever ties with individuals and things that I realized were keeping me from the place I was supposed to be.

Here is the truth: Each one of us have to be willing to do what is best for US. It might sound selfish, but how can we be any good to anyone if we are not able to perform at our best? It could be a job that no longer satisfies us, a relationship that has us feeling empty or a geographic location where we feel as though things have gone as far as it can go. Is it scary to move forward, leaving the comfortable behind? Yes! Is it necessary to do so? Absolutely!

How do you know if a change is needed? Be honest with yourself. Make a mental checklist or even write down where you are, where you want to be and what you can do to get from one place to another. Is it about your attitude, and something you have to mentally let go of? Is it actually someone or something around you? If you can ask the questions that will lead you in the direction you need to go.

No matter what that thing is for you that might be keeping you stuck the important thing to remember is that you have the power. You can make the change. You can make things better. You can set yourself free if you are willing to unload that thing that is holding you back.

Author Joyful Soul: 'Giving Birth' to Something Special

In July 2018 Shannon Little, known to the world as author Joyful Soul, posted this message on INSTAGRAM: "Best Thing I Ever Did Was Believe In Me"---and that is a message she has been sharing with the world.

I discovered Joyful Soul through Facebook initially as she was promoting her book GIVING BIRTH TO HIV. With a thought-provoking title and a fascinating story inside, the book has quickly become a conversation piece.

In this conversation Joyful Soul and I talk about the book, her message and walking in one's purpose.

JOYFUL SOUL ON SHARING HER VOICE:
"It's been rejuvenating to be able to see that I have a voice and something that someone wants to hear. It's been inspiring to me to be able to see that for myself and invest in it and continue the walk.

"I was at a place last year where I wanted to share my story and everything I had endured to help someone else. That was the turning point for me to say this can make a difference."

JOYFUL SOUL ON BEING HONEST WITH YOURSELF.
"It's a very intense process. Anyone who does nonfiction will tell you [that] you have to go back to the beginning and live it out as you're writing it. It puts a little pressure on you, but it allows you to put it all out there and be yourself while you're doing it.

"I never wanted to tell this story. My point that I got to was when I wanted to date again after my husband had passed away. By putting it in a book I invited the platform so people can understand where I've been and where I'm trying to go."

JOYFUL SOUL ON THE RELEASE OF GIVING BIRTH TO HIV:
"[The title of the book] was my way of saying I wanted to give life to a dead situation. I wanted to give birth to it to show them (the reader) a different way.

"People who saw me and never knew exactly what I had gone through were astounded, and it allowed them to open up to me even more. It created a platform where they were able to share themselves. [The book] started a healing process for me and them. It's more than a book. It's a movement."

As Joyful Soul continues to share her message through the written form and her social message she hopes to be able to encourage others and get them to see that their lives can be better, if they are willing to do the work.

When it comes to relationships she told me that "A relationship does contain work. It contains serious commitment and communication. Being able to lay that foundation is a great experience for myself." She knows it will be the same for us too.

In meeting people where they are Joyful Soul is sharing her brand and spreading the word that if we do the work we can all give birth to something special. And that's something we can all look forward to doing.

Taylor Hicks: From Las Vegas to American Idol & Beyond

We have all experienced what are known as "full-circle moments", those things that start us in one place in our lives and through challenges and accomplishments lead us back stronger and more prepared for what's next. For Taylor Hicks it is those full-circle moments that have made him the international sensation that people have gotten to know and love.

As American Idol said goodbye this year after 15 seasons, Taylor Hicks joined the All-Star line-up of performers. It was 10 seasons ago when the Alabama native put the world under his spell, winning season five of American Idol in a finale that brought in over 30 million viewers. Since then the platinum-selling recording artist has been able to share his love of music with his fans and living the life that so many just dream about.

There's just something about Taylor Hicks that draws you in, so when the announcement came in April 2012 that he was going to be headlining an eight-week engagement at Bally's Las Vegas (the very city where he auditioned for American Idol in 2006) he quickly became a trending topic on Twitter.

When I was offered the opportunity to interview Hicks I knew that I wanted it to be more than just about his music. I wanted to share with readers an opportunity to get to know the man behind the headlines, behind the success and behind the music. I think we accomplished just that.

In this conversation we talked about the fans, the talent and what he has to say about the process that has made his success possible.

HICKS ON THE IMPACT OF AMERICAN IDOL: "It changed my life. I mean going from being a struggling artist and musician to being a household name.... It's one of those things I didn't take it for granted. I understood the business, and I know how hard it is to catch that big break. Obviously the break that I caught was one of the biggest in entertainment and television."

HICKS ON RETURNING HOME: "It's amazing. I mean, there's nothing like it. To have that kind of fan base and be on a show like Idol and come home is pretty awesome. I've been very blessed to have that opportunity."

HICKS ON THE JOURNEY: "I think I was always singing as a kid, learning music. The love for music started at a very early age. I knew this was the path that I was going down. As a kid I had a vision of being an artist, an entertainer and being famous. When you have thought it all along and it happens, it's really easy to be yourself."

HICKS ON BEING AUTHENTIC: "I think that when you're talking about business, your relationships you have and the people that are around you, they can tell if you are being real. As long as you are being true to yourself you will be able to to let people understand what that looks like and help them to see it's okay for them to be themselves. People who really know you for you, that is something that definitely helps you. It keeps you grounded. The people who knew you 'when' are the best."

HICKS ON THE RESPONSIBILITY TO HIS FANS AND THE MUSIC:  "I feel really blessed and thankful for those who voted for me and have supported me in my career as an artist. If it wasn't for the fans in my business I wouldn't be here. I have to respect what they have to say, listen to them and let them be a part of what I have going on. It's important that I have undeniably great music. I think with me and the way that I feel about releasing a product or an album is not to dilute it. I don't want to release stuff that may not be as great as it can be. That's what I'm going to do with this next album. I think this should be what every artist should strive, to put as much of their own influence on their art as possible."

HICKS ADVICE FOR ALL THOSE WITH A PASSION: "I've lived the American dream. You have to get alot of nos before you get the one yes. It's something you have to take to heart and really have the vision to carry it through, whether it's singing, dancing, writing, business or whatever. Take it from me: I've had alot of nos, but all it takes is that one yes and you're on your way."

[To You, From Me] Becoming New From the Inside Out

I tell everyone that I am a work in progress.

When I see the way my life has evolved over the past decade I have many reasons to be thankful and to feel blessed, but that doesn't mean the work is over.

I, like many of you, began 2014 with a list of goals that I wanted to be able to achieve. Have i accomplished them all? No, but I choose to focus on the strides that I have made, the people I have inspired and the impact that I am able to make in my corner of the world. The same should be true for you. If you haven't achieved what you have wanted to up to this point, don't let that get you down. If you are reading this that means that you have been given another day to make some amazing strides. The choice is totally up to you.

In this issue of Conversations Magazine we hope to inspire you to become new from the inside out. What does that mean? Well, I believe the articles will get you to thinking not just about the individuals profiled but about yourself and what you are able to do beginning right now. It all begins with the decision.

For those who read scripture Roman 12: 2 says in part: "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind..." That shows us that anything that we want to manifest on the outside must begin within. The three individuals on the cover of this issue (Michael Cory Davis, Glenda L. Hunter and Branden Nicholson) have all realized that. No matter what their professions they have been able to 'renew their minds', activating their gifts and seeing how they are being used in the world.

That is my challenge for you. No matter what you want to do (pursue a career, perfect a craft or improve things on the homefront), you can do it, but you have to approach it with the right attitude. As I mentioned I haven't been able to do everything I started out to this year---but that doesn't mean I am going to stop trying. Neither should you.

Maya Angelou: Benefiting by Surrendering All to All

In 2011 Dr. Maya Angelou received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, from Barack Obama. This year the national treasure that is Dr. Maya Angelou released her new book MOM & ME & MOM. In it she not only shares lessons learned from her mother, but how she came to better know herself along the way.

Chronicling a conversation she had with her mother, Dr. Angelou says this: "She (her mother) actually said, 'Mary McLeod Bethune, Eleanor Roosevelt and my mother,' - she said, 'You're in that category.' I was 22 years old! She said she was too mean to lie, and she was very intelligent. So I thought, suppose she's right? Suppose I do have something? Suppose I am going to be somebody?" That conversation made her think that her life could mean something---and she was right.

For generations now Ms. Angelou has been the teacher of women and men around the world, showing them what is possible no matter where they are from. One such student of her teachings is Rosa Johnson Butler, her very own niece and archivist.

"She has been a part of my life all my life," she shared with me during our conversation together about her role in bringing the book MAYA ANGELOU: A Glorious Celebration to life. She told me the idea for the book initially came from Dr. Angelou's longtime friend Dr. Long. He asked her to collaborate on the project and the process went on from there.

During our exchange together I asked Rosa what was something that she could tell us about Dr. Angelou that  some might be surprised to discover. She went on to share this: "I was recently asked during an event that who my aunt, who is a source of inspiration and counsel for so many goes to," she told me. "I told them the answer is simple: she goes to God. My aunt told me that she said to God some time again if you want me to say it put it in my mouth. She has surrendered herself totally as a tool and instrument of God."

This reminded me of what Dr. Angelou said to Oprah during an episode of Super Soul Sunday on  OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network. She said that to her God is all, and it is to All that we must all go to find peace.

Another great story that Rosa shared was about when Dr. Angelou was a teenager. "My aunt spoke several languages as a teen," she told me. "At this time she was 6 feet tall, pregnant, unwed, still in high school and of course black. She would go and stand outside the United Nations building in San Francisco, watching the people come and go. She was convinced that if she wasn't black, or 6 feet tall and pregnant that she could get a job there as a translator. Afterwards she would go home and weep. Fast forward to the 50th anniversary of the United Nations and who do they ask to write a poem about the event? My aunt, Dr. Maya Angelou."

The lesson for us? "I really believe that each one must teach one," Rosa told me. "Life will knock you down but you must not be defeated by it. We are standing up and saying we will not be defeated. Right will win out."

Rosa told me that during a conversation she had with her aunt she told her "the stream of knowledge just comes out of you." Rosa says that Dr. Angelou told her that it comes out of her from the source, and when you learn to surrender to All there is nothing that is impossible.

On Wednesday, May 28, 2014 Dr. Angelou fell asleep in death at her home. She was 86 years old. It was her desire to know the truth and be an instrument for good. May we all discover how to do the same.

THE WRITE STUFF: Author Phoenix

When author Phoenix got the first shipment of her debut novel ANYBODY'S SOMEBODY (published by FreedomInk) she just couldn't keep it to herself. "It was a phenomenal experience, one unlike I've ever known before," she told Conversations' Cyrus Webb during their sit-down in Pearl, MS. "The books came...I was in my pajamas and I immediately brought out my camera and had to take a picture of it because I was so proud of it."

And Phoenix has every reason to be proud. The book, one of Cyrus Webb's favorite of the year, is a powerful release by a first-time author. It's one that the author dedicated to women, the very inspiration before the book.

When asked when she knew she wanted to write ANYBODY'S SOMEBODY the author relayed this story: "It was about 2011...Shortly after college I ad already been doing poetry and had been getting my voice out that way, but women had a story to tell. I would interview them about how they feel and what stories they wanted to get out there." Phoenix would then put them in a poem. Out of that collection Anybody's Somebody was born. "I wanted to get their voices out there in novel form," she says, and that is exactly what she has accomplished..

The book takes you into the personal experiences of best friends Karrine and Mia. Webb asked Phoenix about the decision to tell the girls' story in first person. She told him it was a way of making it more personal for the reader and allow thing to go through the situations right along with the characters.

Though erotic in nature, the book focuses heavily on the themes of friendships, being your best self, knowing your worth and more. "I wanted to touch on everything that a woman in this day and age is going through," says Phoenix.

Her message to men and women? "You were made for a reason. You can't be anybody's somebody... Know your self-worth and where you're going in life... Don't go out there and give yourself away."

Chicken Soup for the Soul's Amy Newmark

I have only been enjoying Chicken Soup for the Soul for about the past 10 years, but for those who want to know how it all began they have re-released the original book from 20 years ago with a little something new as well.

The book allows us to not only enjoy the original stories from the first inspirational book but gives us a nice commentary from Jack Canfield on how the series original began, what the hope was and where it is today. Definitely great for those of us who didn't know the history. Along with Jack's words are bonus stories that give you an amazing look at the world and what is possible through it.

One of the ones that struck me from the bonus stories was from the series Publisher and Editor-In-Chief Amy Newmark. She takes us into the two words that she avoids, and shows us how by not living a life of regret we are able to look at life in a totally different way. I had a chance to talk with Newmark on Conversations LIVE about the book and what it has been able to see the growth of the series over the years. For her one of the most powerful aspects is how they stories have affected people's lives.

In the afterward of the book she writes this: "The overarching theme in this book is positive thinking...It's our job at Chicken Soup for the Soul to focus on finding stories for you that are positive and uplifting and helpful. Before I became publisher of Chicken Soup for the Soul five years ago, I spent six months getting to know the company, and I read 100 of the old titles. After reading all of those books and tens of thousands of stories submitted for our most recent books, the thing that has struck me the most is the resilience of the human spirit. We try to show you that in all our books."

Newmark says "What I've learned is that we are all capable of handling a lot. And our ability to handle things seems to expand when we need it to."

She shares these seven tips that she has gleaned from the thousands of stories Chicken Soup for the Soul has published:

1.     Pursue at least one of your passions.
2.     Do something that has meaning to you and gives you purpose.
3.     Count your blessings.
4.     Smile at everyone.
5.     Keep learning.
6.     Take the long-term view.
7.     Take some time for yourself.

The 20th Anniversary Edition of the new Chicken Soup for the Soul volume also includes new stories by Dr. Oz, Deepak Chopra, Anthony Robbins and don Miguel Ruiz are also included, but the other account that stuck with me after reading the book was by Tory Johnson. She shares in her story how she had become comfortable in her success at her place of employment until all that she knew was taken away. After taking stock of her situation and her life she realized the real power in embracing the power she has been given and keeping her destiny within her own hands.

[To You, From Me] Recognizing Your Season

It was about 10 years ago that I embarked on what would be a life-changing event in my life: the hosting of a radio show.

Before that I was known in Mississippi and in other parts of the South for my art work, poetry and speaking engagements. Coming to radio in July 2003 I didn't know what I was going to do or what impact it would have or what would come of it, but I knew I wanted to bring my best to it.

Ten years later that step has led me to not just hosting a radio show with literally millions of listeners around the world but led to the creation of this magazine as well as a global co-ed book club. Again, I didn't know all of this would happen, and if you had told me, I probably wouldn't have believed you. What I did know, however, is something that I had been taught early in life: hard work pays off.

This anniversary issue of Conversations Magazine is not just a reflection of the past decade. For me it is a reminder of what I attempt to represent as well as the importance of sharing something that will inspire others along their journey.

It's not easy to blaze a trail of your own. Being a follower is definitely less of a test of your dedication, perseverance and commitment to a task, but it leads to your fulfilling someone else's dream. Your time on this earth is precious, and it should be spent bringing to fruition your own dreams and passion. Is it scary? Without a doubt. Will there be naysayers? I can answer yes! But the question that you have to ask yourself each and every day is this: Is the fear of failure worth the cost of giving up on yourself? If you can say that fear will not stop you, then I can guarantee that in time success will be yours.

My mother and step-father love the outdoors. I didn't inherit that from them, but I have marveled at how their persistence when it comes to gardening and planting has yielded amazing results. They labor, they nurture and then enjoy the increase that comes in. I call it their season.

Are your ready to do the same? As I continue each and every day to nurture this brand, I knew that great things are going to come my way. I want that for you as well. Discover your passion. Feed it. Work at it diligently, and then watch the increase.

Heather Powell: Sharing How To BELIEVE IT TO LIFE

Everything great has a beginning. Somewhere along the way there was a spark that was ignited that led the way to something bigger and better to be born. For singer/songwriter Heather Powell that could not be more evident. When she joined Cyrus Webb on Conversations LIVE to introduce her story and music from her appropriately titled album BELIEVE IT TO LIFE she was aware of what had made her current state of being possible.

When talking about her love affair with words, Powell told Webb that "It has been a life-long thing for me." She then explained. "My mother is a poet, so words have been in my family forever. My father used to read to us at night as a family, so stories and words and language have always been a part of my life."

The actual process for her, though, came much later. "It just really came to me over the past year and a half," she revealed. "It's been an amazing journey of my life and completely unexpected." She then added: "It has been a true blessing for me."

That in itself shows that the path was there, but it was up to Heather to decide to walk it. She told Webb in the radio interview that she began her artistic journey as a actress and singer in the musical theater performing on stage. She admitted that she felt a little stuck. "My coach freed me to express myself in other ways," she says. She then began to wonder what would it be like to write her own songs. Her epiphany was this: "When you allow yourself the freedom other things bubble up. I started writing from my heart the songs that my soul told me that I needed to get on paper. That became the album."

The album BELIEVE IT TO LIFE shares not only the personal stories of Heather Powell's life but gives inspiration to those who are able to hear it and accept the message she is presenting. Webb asked her what it was like to perform her music for a live audience. "It is the most incredible experience," she gushed. "This album and this music are my baby. When I was getting ready to perform for the first time I was as nervous as parents are about their child going out and being judged." When it happened, though, she went on to say "it was beautiful to let the music stand on its own."

The lesson that Heather is able to share from her experience? "When you let go and truly do believe that what is meant to happen is going to happen then you'll be amazed at where you find yourself. You'll experience the joy of what you were meant to do. As artists we know who we are and who we were meant to be. We have no choice but to do it (music). This has helped me become the artist I was meant to be. If you continue to say it, express it and make the baby steps forward, it will happen for you."

"With all that is going on in the world, Heather says that she wants the music of BELIEVE IT TO LIFE "to have something that lifts you up,makes you smile, tap your toes, sit back and relax, smile and feel a little bit better." We think she has done that and then some!

Keith Moody: Living His Life By Dreaming Out Loud

From the moment I found out that Keith Moody's CD was called DREAMING OUT LOUD I knew already that it was going to be something special---and I was right. Though not an actual track on the album, the artist is able to take that theme of seeing his dreams coming true and share them in each and every song on the project.

Doug Weber of New Ocean Media was kind enough to set up an opportunity for me to talk with Moody about his music, living the dream and the lessons learned along the way. Here are the highlights from that conversation.

KEITH MOODY ON LIVING THE DREAM: "Cyrus, I find it very rewarding to do what I love to do. I've dreamed of this since I was a kid. It makes you feel very fortunate and thankful for the opportunity you've been granted to do this."

KEITH MOODY ON THE POWER OF MUSIC: "It came in several stages.For me it started with listening. By listening to other performers I was able to see how they could take you to completely different place. I started writing poetry in Elementary School and all the way through High School. After that I learned to play and write. It allowed me to get alot of complex feelings out."

KEITH MOODY ON SHARING THE MUSIC: "It makes you feel as though you have found your place, your little niche in the universe that we live in. To know that something that came from your soul is benefiting others is so amazing. Here I am this guy who is doing what he loves and able to bring a lot of joy to people along the way. That's true happiness, and true happiness isn't something that you can necessarily buy.

Young Dinero:Staying True to the Grind & Himself

Over the years I have interviewed hundreds of recording artists on Conversations LIVE the radio show and for Conversations Magazine and few have the drive, determination and passion of Ice Age recording artist Young Dinero.

From the first time I spoke with him you could tell that he was excited not just for the success he was garnering for his music but just to be doing what he loved so much.

In January he released his new mixtape FACE YOUR FEAR, a mixture of tracks that show off his lyrical ability and is definitely to have the listener thinking. When I asked him about the way his career has taken off, Young Dinero was humble in his response. "It's like a blessing," he told me. "It's all about hard work and dedication. I'm just staying focused and trying to make good music."

The seriousness he has for music began some 2 1/2 years ago . "That's when I really began taking music seriously," he says "I wanted the world to hear me and know who I was. I wanted them to get something real and to show that there are some young, smart rappers out there who are doing something positive."

Without a doubt Young Dinero is showing others that you can succeed at your dreams, but it's not just about getting another hit. He wants to give something to those who listen as well. "When I get in the booth I look to create something that others can be motivated by,"he says. And motivating people is something that he does quite well. Either through his Twitter page or videos on Youtube he is never more than a social media site away.

Those fans are not just listening to Young Dinero and following his career. He is listening to them as well, and that has provided it's own inspiration. "When I hear back from the fans it let's me know I am on the right path," he told me. "Because they are hearing it from me they are getting to know who the real Young Dinero is."

Talking about things being "real", when I asked the artist what it was like to be a part of the Ice Age family he told me "it's crazy" and "epic". "I have always been a fan of Mike Jones," Young Dinero told me. "Mike saw my grind," and that grind has led to his being a part of one of the South's most notable record labels.

When asked what advice he has for those artists coming up the ranks or anyone with a dream, Young Dinero says this: "Don't be afraid to be yourself."

Should Love Ever Hurt?

Should love ever hurt?

It seems like such an unnecessary question, but in the time that we live in there are still those that feel as though they have to suffer in order to enjoy love.

Over the years I have had the honor of interviewing hundreds of individuals who talk with me about the abuse they endured at the hands of those who were supposed to love them or who at least said in words that they loved them. Some told me they stayed in relationships, because that was how they thought love was shown. Still others had their innocence destroyed by predators who took from them their dignity, their sense of self-worth and the understanding of what love actually is.

As a person of faith I am reminded of what the Bible says about love in 1 Corinthians Chapter 13: "Love is long-suffering and kind. Love is not jealous, it does not brag, does not get puffed up, does not behave indecently, does not look for its own interests, does not become provoked...It does not rejoice over unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth...Love never fails. (1 Cor. 13:4-8 NWT)"

This should remind us that love does not hold you hostage. It frees you. It is the greatest gift God has given us to feel, and no one should ever take that away from us---and this also means that we have to be careful who we give it to.

October is typically recognized in part for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Conversations Media Group and its parent company Shadow Play Entertainment takes it a step further and looks at all forms of abuse. Over the past few years we have used it as an opportunity to share the stories of individuals who have overcome abuse and made the journey from being a victim to a victor.

On Saturday, October 15, 2011 I hosted a panel conversation on the radio with abuse survivors Freda Emmons, Dr. Loren Due and Patrick Dati. They shared their very personal stories of abuse, and how they have been able to move forward and are now in a position to help others along the way.

In the discussion we focused on the following three points when it comes from making the transition from being a victim to a victor and survivor:

1) Speaking out. Not allowing the abuser to have to power over you by causing your silence.
2) Forgiveness. Even if it is something that seems to come slowly towards the abuser, making sure that you have forgiven yourself and refuse to blame yourself for what was done.
3) Knowing that you are not alone. Making sure that you take advantage of the support group available to you all around the world. This will also let others know that they are not by themselves and may aide in their speaking out as well.

What I have learned is that no matter what you have gone through in your life it doesn't have to define you. You can take steps today to emerge from the darkness of your past and truly enjoy the life in front of you. Comedian Roxy Rich: Showing Being A Woman Is No Laughing Matter

In 10th grade she was voted Funniest Person in class. Now an adult Roxy Rich is still making people laugh and doing it her own way.

The spunky comedian and author of the book ROXIE DOES RETAIL stopped by Conversations LIVE radio show in early September of this year and chatted with host Cyrus Webb about the journey and how she has been able to make a name for herself while sticking to her guns in the process.

Webb asked Roxy what it has been like to find her niche in the world and do something that she loves so much. She shared with the host and the radio audience that she has been able to put her own spin on comedy when it comes to how women look at the dating scene. "When I started doing dating material," she said to him, that is when it all clicked. "Going through my life I just found the humor in it, but I also wanted to educate people. It costs a lot to be a girl! You're faced with all these guys calling you a gold digger. I'm like 'Dude, do you know how much it cost to go on a date?! It's not a date. It's a job interview!'"

Roxy soon realized that what she was saying was not just funny but Dating 101. She had audience members (men and women) telling her that they were looking at things differently because of her routine. "It felt good to be actually enlightening people," she told Webb

During the conversation on the radio show Webb asked the comedian what she hoped people thought of her when they heard her name. Roxy joked about the first thing people probably thinking when they heard "Roxy Rich" was 'porn star.' She then said, "I want them to think I'm a talented and funny comedian... A lady who is educated and has something to say."

This response led Webb to ask if she felt as though there was more to prove being a female in the business. "Absolutely," Roxie replied. "As a woman people expect that you are not funny." She went on to say that women don't always get the same amount of stage time as men, and for some women there is a tendency to go vulgar to get the attention. "It's almost like you have to be a shock comic when you're a girl," she explained. This truth led her to take some time to figure out what she wanted to say as a comedian. There was also the question of how an audience would perceive her.

What was the solution for her? She says it took her about 15 years to really figure it out, but now she has definitely discovered her place by speaking for a lot of the female audience. "If I can just stand on this viewpoint that it cost money to be a girl, that's funny. My show is based on that viewpoint, but I do more than that."  She then wen ton to say something profound: "It's not a new idea to find a good provider, but women are criticized for wanting that." It is being rationale while mixing it with a joke or two that is really giving Roxy the platform she wants. The rest is just her being who she is.

"You have to have love for yourself," she told Webb. "I have integrity. I know exactly who I am, and what I want to communicate. I just do what I feel I need to do. If I fall on my face it's on me, and if I make it then I know I did it. I'm not a household name yet, but I'm working on in it."

Success for Roxy Rich has gone from being a cocky 19 year old who thought that by 25 she would be starring in movies opposite Brad Pitt. "Now my idea of success is that I am working and being paid for my work," she told Webb. He assured her that there was still time for Pitt.

When giving her advice for all of us with a dream, Roxy says this: If you are true to yourself you are going to get somewhere." Loving what you do is key. "If you really love what you do no matter what hits you in your face, you can conquer it. "

Recording Artist Daniel Peter: Creating Music That Won't Leave You Alone

Growing up he dealt with bullying and being misunderstood, but recording artist Daniel Peter was able to stay focus and thrive thanks to the support of his Mom and Dad and friends. Today he has a worldwide following online because of his musical skills and he is celebrating the release of his single LEAVE ME ALONE.

When I first heard the song I knew he not only had a talent but that others would be brought in under his spell. That is exactly what has happened. When Daniel stopped by Conversations LIVE to discuss the release of the single and what the experience has been like for it he was quite excited about the impact the song was having. "It's been a great experience," he said. "Now I can share the things that are happening in everyone's lives. LEAVE ME ALONE is a song that everyone can relate to. "

Considering the encouragement he received at home, it is no wonder that Daniel Peter has found his calling through music. "When I was young my father always sang to me," he told me.
"I was interested in what he was doing, and I taught myself how to sing." His sharing his music online led to his being noticed on the popular site Youtube. "Now I'm on the road," he said, living a dream.

"I was kinda surprised when I was at the pool and a group of my friends was singing my song," he told me when I asked about what it has been like to have a song available for the world to hear and share. "I didn't know it would spread that fast." Though it has been a lot of hard work, Daniel is proud of the journey so far. "I feel very proud of what I have accomplished," he told me. "I have always wanted a chance to do something with my life." The interesting thing about his wanting to use his life for good is that it's not just about him. During the interview he shared that his father is fighting cancer right now, and Daniel wants to be able to help his father as well as others in need. "I want to make everyone feel loved. So many people don't get a chance. I want to let people know that there is nothing you can't do. "

Daniel told me that his quote is "Live your dream." He shares with his friends and fans the importance of not giving up. "Everyone can get a chance," he told me. "You got to keep going, no matter what anyone says or does. It's your life."

PROFILE: Professional Boxer Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell

Walking the path meant for you is not always as easy as we might like it to be. There are sometimes obstacles that come our way and challenges that threaten us, but it is totally in our control whether we will press forward or allow the things that happen to us to affect who we are and the person we become.

Take Seth Mitchell.  Some five or six years ago those who knew him for football would have thought that the injury he sustained would have ended his life as an athlete. Good thing Seth didn't believe that. Today he is a professional boxer that is literally kicking butts and taking names, and if you ask him he will tell you that he is just getting started.

Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell recently agreed to give me an exclusive for DC Now Radio's edition of Conversations LIVE, and it was an eye-opening discussion from beginning to end.

I began by asking him about what it has been like to have his dedication to boxing and his fans rewarded over the past four years. "It means alot," he told me. "In my hometown I had a big following because of playing football. To come over to boxing and have the success I've had is amazing. It definitely makes me want to work harder. I feel that the people want me to succeed. When they get to know me they see the kind of person I am. They see my character."

Mitchell had his football career cut short in 2005 because of an injury. For some that would have been their obstacle in the road. He sees it another way. "I call it the luck of the draw," he told me. "Up until that point I had never thought about boxing." That changed, however, when he saw a former college football player who had went into boxing and was good at it. Whether you see it as a coincidence or something more destined, it changed Mitchell's life and led him towards the path that he has now been dominating.

One of the main ingredients to Mitchell's accomplishments is the priority he has set for himself. On Facebook he let's it be known that he is a Christian first. Family man second. Boxer third.

"I don't claim to be the most holiest person out there," he explained. "I try to do the right thing. I try to treat people the way I want to be treated. I live my life right as an example for my children. Boxing is my profession, but it doesn't define me. I am defined by being a good father and husband and representing myself well." He then added this: "If you have those things in order you'll be ok."

That is the message he is sharing not just with his family but his fans as well. He wants those who have been following his career and who hear about him to know that you can accomplish your own goals in life if you remain dedicated, work hard and believe in yourself. "You can do whatever you want to do," he says. All you have to do is carry that belief with you.

Recording Artist Latoiya Williams: Using Music to Celebrate Life

We have always heard that seeing is believing, but I think LaToiya Williams might just prove that wrong.

She has become a respected voice in the music industry before really being heard. It was her skills as a songwriter that got the attention of industry insiders and made her one of the go-to people in the business.

This year, however, that is changing as she releases not only her new single THIS LOVE IS SWEET but begins to promote her upcoming album. I had the opportunity to catch up with LaToiya on Conversations LIVE and asked her about the experience and the response to her lyrical abilities.

"It can be a bit overwhelming," she told me, "but it keeps me humble. I just want to give good music to my fans." And her fans definitely appreciate it. It is obvious that her words are a gift, one that she doesn't mind sharing.

So how did this all begin? Latoiya told me that she was singing her first song at the age of two, but it was at the tender age of four that she knew this was what she wanted to do. "I was going around the house singing and singing in the choir," she says. The dedication to it paid off, and at the age of fifteen she was singing background for Yolanda Adams. The rest as they say is history.

Latoiya says it is her faith in God and in her gift that has been the key to her longevity. "Being true to your gift and your character speaks a lot for itself," she relates. "My mother raised me to have respect for myself and other people. That, and the believe in my craft has kept me here Without God I would have given up a long time ago."

Among those who LaToiya associates with on a regular basis are the people who support her career, namely her family, friends and fans. I was surprised to learn, though, that the idea of fans was something somewhat new to the artist. "I honestly didn't know I had fans until Youtube," she says with a laugh. "To go online and see all of the responses...it's like wow! You can get stuck in a studio and you don't see the outside. Thanks to the internet I am able to communicate with my fans and see I have people out here who loved me and wanted me to keep going. If I have all those people pulling for me I don't want to let them down. It's because of them that I am still making music."

For LaToiya Williams music is more than just about the recognition. It's about what is your real motivation. "Regardless of if I don't get a Grammy or an award I'm going to keep singing," she says. "I have always been a firm believer that you don't have to sell yourself in order to get whatever God has for you. Focus on your craft and not the glitz and the glamour. That is the key to real success."

Actor Leif Gantvoort: Crazy In Love with the Craft

For over a decade Leif Gantvoort has been able to share not only his skills as an actor but his ability to tell a story with the world. Doing so has taken him into roles that have been dramatic and at times humorous but through it all they allowed him to do what he loves: bringing stories to life.

His fans have followed him over the years through roles on Desperate Housewives and Justified but in 2012 they found him as the villain Glasses in the blockbuster movie The Amazing Spiderman.

Talking with Leif about his journey that has led to being a part of one of the summer's biggest movies was not only entertaining and informative but inspiring as well.

"As a kid I liked the attention acting got me," Leif shared with me. "Just being the focus of attention. He went on, though, to share that "it can be a hard thing to undertake... It's not a forgiving line of work."

His fans haven't seen him in a while, and Leif talked about what that can be like for someone who loves to create. "It's frustrating at times, fulfilling at times, but the good moments make up for the bad ones." He then added: "I love it. It has to be a love, because if it's not a love you'll totally go crazy."

I asked him about that love and when you are able to work how it makes him feel. "It's just something that clicks and feels right when you're doing it," he says. "That's what keeps you coming back." Leif also feels as though it was what he was born to do. He explained it by saying that acting is "everything that I want it to be. It is a wonderful thing to be a part of when it happens."

When we began to talk about Spiderman and what it was like to be a part of such a respected franchise, you could hear the excitement almost leap in his voice. "Every step of it was a surprise," he says. I was excited to be a part of something like this [movie]. Everyone was so great to work with." Reflecting on the fact that not all productions can be as well organized and a joy, Leif tole me "When it happens you're so pleasantly surprised. Every day of your life you want to be a part of that."

Noting his great sense of humor and how he has been able to make use of that on stage, I asked him if it helped not to take himself too seriously. "At the end of the day in this industry you're telling stories," Leif says. "It's fun. Even when it's dead serious it's fun."

One part that doesn't seem to fit with him as well is the red carpet appearance. I asked if he has gotten used to being photographed and analyzed as is custom in the business he's in. "I don't think it can ever be normal," he told me, but I do think the more you do the more you realize it's a part of the job." The way he gets through it? Realizing it is "one of those things you have to do."

Leif gave some great advice for those who look to the industry for their own profession. "I really feel as though I'm on the clock 24 hours a day. I write, direct to try to keep my focus and keep my drive going." He also reminds us all of the human aspect of the work. "You can't walk on set and leave who you are at the door. Not everything is Spiderman. Everything is not a joy. It's not predictable. Every day is a new point of view."
